Charrette Studio Earns Prestigious Award for Transformative Café Renovation

Charrette Studio, a renowned interior design firm based in Bangkok, Thailand, has been honored with the Luxury Lifestyle Awards for Best Luxury Café Interior Design for their exceptional work on Préf, a café located in central Bangkok. This victory expresses the company’s devotion to crafting appealing, functional environments that seamlessly blend style, sustainability, and a profound respect for culture and history.

Charrette Studio was established by Mr. Voravich Rajadhananti and Ms. Sukwasa Preeyachot and led by Ms. Dollaporn Pongsumran and Mr. Natapon Komnuan. It has emerged as a leader in innovative design throughout Asia and their award-winning renovation project, Préf, exemplifies their skill in integrating historical elements with contemporary design in a refreshingly original way, yet with sustainability at the forefront.

Préf, situated in the Sathorn district in Bangkok, is a delightfully restored two-story house from the early 20th century, formerly constructed during the rule of King Rama V. The building, which once served as a meeting place for the Free Thai Movement during World War II, is rich in historical importance. Charrette Studio faced and overcame the challenge of preserving this heritage while updating the space for modern use. This renovation project began in June 2022 and concluded in August 2023 and included removing the whole second floor to craft higher ceilings on the first floor, increasing the space’s warmth and openness. Additionally, the underground level was transformed, featuring semi-private rooms and an outdoor sunken seating area to provide a tranquil escape amid the active city.

The design of Préf merges French and Japandi styles, resulting in a serene, minimalist environment. Regardless of challenges in finding materials to strengthen the elderly structure, the studio managed to maintain the building’s original charm while adapting it for contemporary use. The team emphasized sustainability by reusing existing materials and structures, thus reducing waste and promoting eco-friendly design. With a focus on green spaces, human connection and communal warmth, Préf became a peaceful yet vibrant setting for relaxation and social interaction, blending historical relevance with modern aesthetics.
